Folate, or vitamin B9, is one of the water-soluble B-group vitamins. It influences and controls metabolic synthesis processes and the formation of new healthy cells in our body. The nutrient is also important for a strong heart. Contains methyl folate, the methylated form of folic acid, to ensure optimal absorption and utilisation by the body.

Pregnancy doubles the mother’s body’s need for folic acid, but folic acid is particularly important for fetal development. The Department of Health recommends that all women planning a pregnancy take 400 mcg of the supplement daily from the time of conception until the 12th week of pregnancy. Supplementing with folate contributes to tissue growth in a woman’s body during pregnancy. Low maternal folate levels are a risk factor for neural tube defects in the developing fetus.

The best sources of folic acid are green vegetables such as spinach, lettuce and parsley. Nettle leaves, legumes, peppers, all fruits, berries and citrus fruits are rich in folic acid. These should be eaten as unprocessed as possible to preserve the folic acid in the food.

Folate also contributes to the formation of red blood cells, the normal functioning of the nervous system, and helps to reduce blood levels of homocysteine, which is linked to the risk of cardiovascular disease, and helps to reduce fatigue and tiredness.

There is some evidence that folate may have a positive effect on mood and may help relieve symptoms of stress.

Folate is involved in several important biochemical processes in the body. Methylation is an important biochemical process in which a methyl group (CH3) is transferred from one molecule to another. This process plays an important role in a number of physiological functions and is essential for the maintenance of general health. The main reasons why methylation is important are DNA synthesis and repair, detoxification, regulation of gene expression, control of the immune system, hormone balance/control.

It is a versatile vitamin that affects many body systems and is vital for many body functions. Its balanced intake is essential for overall health and well-being.
